Description Nazi Anschluss Medal. Instituted on May 1, 1938, the medal commemorated the annexation of Austria to the German Reich, the so called Anschluss. Fine quality detailed reproduction with ribbon. The Anschluss Commemorative Medal Die Medaille zur Erinnerung an den 13. März 1938 A circular silvered medal with a loop for suspension of the ribbon. To the obverse there are two raised male figures, the one on the right bearing the German flag in his left hand, with his right hand placed around the shoulders of the figure on the left, with broken chains around his right arm (symbolic of the annexation of the Austria , with the German eagle directly below. To the reverse is the date 13th March 1938” centrally and circumscribed with the motto “Ein Volk, Ein Reich, Ein Führer” (One People, One Country, One Leader); The medal measures approx 32.07 mm in diameter. Instituted on 1 May 1938, the medal commemorated the annexation of Austria by the Third Reich. So German troops crossed the Austrian border on 12 March 1938 without any resistance and were warmly welcomed. Crowds lined the way and unification was almost entirely welcomed. The medal, known as the “Anschluss medal”, was awarded to those, both military and civilian, who contributed to or participated in the annexation. Included in this were German State officials and members of the German Wehrmacht and units of the SS who entered Austria. Austrian Nazis that had worked fo the r union with Germany also qualified for the medal. The widows of those who had been killed for their cause.The last award was on on 31 December 1940, a total of 318,689 medals were awarded.
